Copper Countertops

Many homeowners know that a copper sink for their kitchen is an option, but they are less aware of copper countertops. For several reasons, copper countertops are an excellent kitchen work surface material and definitely worth considering for a home remodeling project.

Stainless steel are the most common type of countertops, but copper is gaining in popularity. Whereas stainless is commonly used in modern or contemporary kitchens, copper countertops are used for rustic and country styles. Another metal option is zinc countertops.

Copper is a very unique natural material. When first installed, copper does not look rustic at all. It is very shiny, and can be described as "gold stainless steel." Since it is a softer metal than stainless, it is more likely to be damaged. Tarnishing and color changes in the surface over time will occur from acidity and humidity (moisture), but these markings are the characteristics that give copper its typical look and dull brown color. This change over time is known as patina.

If you are looking to keep the shiny color of a copper countertop, it can be sealed with a high grade polyurethane lacquer. A long as the sealing and regular polishing are maintained, you can keep the copper looking new, tarnish and scratch free. If however, you want the traditional dull look, no sealing is required. Keep the copper countertop unsealed, and it will naturally tarnish to give you the wonderful rustic distressed look over time that so many homeowners seek. In addition to deciding about the color of your counter, there are many textures and finishes available to choose from for adding even more character.

Copper countertops have been used for many years in the kitchen for practical as well as decorative reasons. When left unsealed, cooper naturally provides an antimicrobial work surface. Copper countertops have been EPA tested and found to be naturally resistant against common kitchen bacteria growths such as E. coli and MRSA without the use of bleach or other harsh cleaners. Only mild soap and water are needed for cleaning.

Copper countertop installation is not very difficult since it is a soft metal and actually one of the softest countertop materials. (Granite and concrete countertops are among the hardest to work with.) Seams and miters are easy to solder and can be welded and polished for a uniform appearance and excellent performance (no leaks or cracks).
